Social Services

The Social Services Staff of the Elyria City Health District is available to assist with information and referrals related to health and human services available in the community.  This department is staffed by two Licensed Social Workers and three Outreach Workers who are able to assist clients in identifying barriers that may interfere with their ability to obtain services for themselves and their families.

Common situations where a social worker can provide referrals or facilitate access:

  1. Food, housing, emergency shelter, help with utility bills
  2. Application process for public assistance: Healthy Start, food stamps, Medicaid
  3. Health care
  4. Legal referrals
  5. Job training or employment opportunities
  6. Earning your GED, returning to school, completing one's education
  7. Relationship problems with family members or others
  8. Loneliness, anxiety or depression
  9. Difficulty in adjusting to or coping with a new infant
  10. Alcohol and drug abuse
  11. Difficulty with transportation
  12. Child Care Resources
  13. Parenting or Developmental Questions Concerning Children

Free tax information and filing assistance is available through the Lorain County EITC Tax Coalition.

A "Super Saturday" kick off for the program is scheduled on February 2, 2008 at the West River Rd. branch of the Elyria Public Library from 10am-4pm.  Free tax preparation, guest speakers and refreshments will be provided.

The coalition will also staff four locations which will provide free tax filing services with preparers trained to calcuate the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  Locations and schedules are:

Elyria Public Library (Walk-in) W. River Rd branch - 1194 W. River Rd. N, Elyria Tuesdays 10am-2pm, Wednesdays 10am-2pm and 5pm-7:30pm and Saturdays 10am-2pm (Note: every other Saturday beginning 2/9/08)

Kennedy Plaza (Walk-in) 1730 Broadway, Lorain.  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm-8pm

Lorain County Labor Agency (By appointment only) 1936 Cooper Foster Rd., Lorain.  Call 440-282-7401 or 800-499-8817 for an appointment.

We Care We Share Ministries (walk-in) held at South Lorain Community Center 1607 E. 31st St., Lorain.  Wednesdays 9am-Noon and 2pm-4pm and Saturdays Noon - 4pm
